"TUBA-SPECIFIC" ACADEMIC BIO

Joe "TubaJoe" Exley is a full-time tuba player in New York City whose performances number well into the thousands and has performed with hundreds of different ensembles in just about every genre imaginable.  These include performances at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Radio City Music Hall, headlining domestic and international music festivals, and clubs and studios everywhere in between.  TubaJoe has been heard atop Billboard charts and repeatedly on the networks of ABC, BBC, CBS, NBC, PBS, and NPR, appeared on hundreds of recordings, and has been featured on Bravo! TV as well as on  radio and television across Europe.  

Some of the notable artists/ensembles Joe has performed or recorded with include: Howard Johnson & Gravity!, including on the most recent album release "Testimony"; with Austria's Heavy Tuba (in trio with Janos Mazura and Roland Szentpali); an electric tuba solo on a #1 Billboard album with The Dillinger Escape Plan; brass arranger and music director with Zola Jesus; recordings with Joe Lovano, 
Bernard "Pretty" Purdie, the International Contemporary Ensemble; shows with Red Baraat, Hazmat Modine, The New Orleans Klezmer Allstars, T.S. Monk with Wallace Roney, Nenna Frelon and Kevin Mahogany; on tv news themes, movie soundtracks, and most recently Joe made an appearance (as himself) in Mindy Kaling's recent feature film "Late Night" with Dame Emma Thompson.

Joe holds a Master of Music performance degree from Northwestern University where he studied with Rex Martin, and he holds a Bachelor of Music Performance degree from the University of Northern Colorado where he studied with Jack Robinson.  Joe studied additionally with Arnold Jacobs, Gene Pokorny, and Kenneth Singleton.

Joe primarily performs on a vintage Mirafone 186 4U CC tuba or a rare vintage Keefer BBb "Wagnerphone" sousaphone.  Joe is an artist of Parker Mouthpieces, Accord Cases, and Sennheiser Electronics.
